- I grew up with the Little Sisters of the Poor being close by in my old neighborhood. We collected canned goods every year and gave them to them. They always seemed full of joy. I was also taught by Dominican nuns who remained in their habits even though most nuns were tossing them away. I can’t say they were always joyful, since they had 40-50 kids in a class, but we never thought they were anything but real women. I recall my mother and her friend talking about her friend’s daughter who had begun first grade with a nun as her teacher. I never forgot hearing her tell my mother about the nun teacher and how her daughter told her how much she loved the nun and how beautiful she was. My mother’s friend told my mother that when she met her she was taken aback because she wasn’t a radiant beauty on the outside. Yet her six-year old saw her as so beautiful. I was not fortunate enough to have known that nun but I have known many who were indeed beautiful, radiating that certain something I guess we can call joy, happiness and faith shining through. I have also met many of these so-called new nuns and I am not impressed at all. I tell them real nuns were habits. I just don’t trust a nun who hides who she is or should be behind a short haircut and sensible shoes dressed like every other women around, and even some of the men with others. Finally, my present parish is not too far from my old one and the parish collects canned goods and money for the Little Sisters. I see those sisters and they radiate peace, serenity, confidence and joy, and I see that whether I am speaking with them or just passing them in the Church. Real nuns are indeed beautiful and their presence immediately changes everyone around them, even if they are just passing by. What have we truly lost when Vatican II inspired them to become what most orders have become. Sadly, it is best that these old orders shrivel up and whither away. When I read obituaries and come across a deceased sister’s announcement, so many of them give their name followed by “formerly known as Sister . . .”, the name they took as a traditional nun, and which they shed when they “modernized”, and I can’t express how sad I feel when I read that. Anyway, Ann’s site is well worth paying attention to, and she really struck a chord with me with these posts. I really wish we had real nuns all around us and part of our daily lives.
